Miramar College closed down firearms classes that had been offered to the general public since 1981 amid an investigation last year into an instructor who brought a gun to a meeting.

The instructor, Jordan Omens, was briefly placed on leave. He has since returned to the faculty and is teaching this fall. Administrators said he brandished a gun during a tense meeting in October 2014.

Omens is suing over the discipline he received, saying it was cooked up on false pretenses.

The college told U-T Watchdog in response to questions about the Omens case that it conducted a review of operations at the gun range about the same time and “became aware of potential safety oversights of firearms and ammunition.”

“During this process, it was determined that there were two missing firearms,” the college said in a statement.
